Eden was paradise—safe, supplied, and meaningful work—but it was also a classroom. God placed the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in the middle of the garden and forbade eating from it.

Love requires a real choice. The tree presented Adam and Eve that choice. When they sinned, the first consequence was death: separation from God. Holiness means God is set apart from sin; even the “smallest” sin deserves death and grieves Him.
